Interactive broadcasting application delivers amazing results at NBC Universal

Econify supported NBC for the 2022 election cycle to help develop a fantastic interactive broadcast application

Challenge

NBC News needed a robust interactive data visualization application for their 2022 election coverage, robust enough for unexpected intensity during the much hyped primaries. The interactive application was to be fundamental to NBC's coverage and came with high stakes attached as it needed to challenge coverage with other news networks.

Goals

Create a slick, reliable interactive broadcast application and associated systems to support it.

Support high-stakes live election coverage.

Deliver seamless primary and midterm coverage for NBC.

Econify architected and built a data management and visualization platform that could be performant throughout potential spikes.

Solution

With a tight schedule, Econify worked very closely with the NBC team to develop APIs, a React.js CMS and interactive data visualization platforms using a range of technology, including D3 - a data visualization framework - Vue.js, Express and Mapbox. NBC's broadcast primary coverage faced unexpected intensity and the technology decisions made ensured the application was fit-for-purpose.

Business Value

The "Big Board" application as used by Steve Kornacki, established NBC News as the leading broadcast network for election coverage while achieving historic viewership milestones. A collaborative team effort that ultimately also culminated in multiple award nominations for Technical Excellence in News and Outstanding Live News Special.
