CAREERS / Contract Senior Java Engineer

Contract Senior Java Engineer

Job Type: 2 months, full-time, fixed term
Locations: Remote. NYC-area candidates preferred. Working hours need to overlap Eastern time.
Technologies: Java, Spring Boot, PostgreSQL (or similar relational database), In-App Purchase and Payment Flows

Job Description

A subscriber should get the same result whether they sign up on a phone, a TV, or the web. Each store bills differently, and those differences are where subscriptions break. Entitlements fall out of sync. A failed renewal gets treated as a cancellation. A refund goes through in the store and never reaches the backend, so the user keeps access they’re no longer paying for. Every one of these ends up as lost revenue or a support ticket.

This project needs purchase flows that hold up across platforms, built by an engineer who has already fixed these problems on more than one of them.

What you’ll do

You’ll join an Econify team working inside the client’s existing repositories and workflows. The work covers:

  • Implementing in-app purchase and subscription flows on Android and connected TV devices, including Google Play Billing and Roku Pay.
  • Building and maintaining the Java services that verify receipts, manage entitlements, and process store server notifications.
  • Handling the billing edge cases: renewals, grace periods, restores, refunds, upgrades and downgrades, and users who move between devices or platforms.
  • Recording design decisions as you make them (short decision records in the repo, for example), so the client’s team can own the system once the engagement ends.

What we're looking for

Required

  • Shipped in-app purchases or subscriptions in production on at least two platforms, such as Google Play Billing and Apple StoreKit, or a TV platform’s billing SDK.
  • Strong Java, ideally with Spring or a comparable backend framework. Android Java or Kotlin helps if the scope includes a client-side app.
  • Built server-side receipt validation and entitlement logic, including webhook or server-to-server notification handling.
  • Debugged a billing issue in production yourself: a missed renewal, a duplicate charge, an entitlement that didn’t revoke. We’ll ask you to walk us through one.

Useful, but not required

  • Roku Pay or Roku in-app purchase flows, including server-side transaction validation through Roku’s web services. Other connected TV billing (Fire TV, Android TV, tvOS) also counts.
  • A subscription management layer such as RevenueCat, Recurly, Zuora, or an in-house equivalent.
  • Store review for a billing-heavy app, including at least one rejection cycle.
  • Subscription or consumer app work in a high-traffic environment.

How the engagement runs

Two months goes quickly. Week one is ramp-up: access, the codebase, and the existing billing setup. By week two you should be shipping. The team is distributed, so most coordination happens in writing. That works when blockers get raised the day they appear, with enough context that someone can act on them without a follow-up call.

What to know up front

  • The engagement depends on a pending project award. Econify is putting a team forward, and we’ll confirm dates and scope as soon as we hear. Better you know that now than find out later.
  • Scope firms up after kickoff. Technical discovery settles the final platform list and integration details, so expect adjustments in the first two weeks.
  • Connected TV billing behaves differently from mobile. Roku and other TV platforms handle purchases, restores, and renewals in their own ways, and mobile store patterns don’t carry over cleanly. Previous TV billing work will shorten your ramp-up.
  • Store approval sits outside our control. Apple, Google, and the TV platforms each run review cycles that can add days. Allow for one or two rejection rounds on any new billing flow.
  • Two months is fixed. If the work runs long, an extension is possible but not guaranteed.
  • Good work here can lead to more. If the project goes well, we’ll want the same people on future engagements. We can’t promise it, but contractors who deliver on this one go to the top of our list.
