A multi-faceted project that encompassed new launches with stack consolidation

Challenge

NBC News needed to launch a number of new digital verticals and consolidate its stack across NBCNews, MSNBC, and Today Digital. Whilst they had already moved onto a services oriented architecture, each site and app still had distinct implementation challenges as well as unique data models, bogging down development and impacting content recirculation across the network of sites.

Goals

The predominant goals of this project were:

Consolidate technology stack.
Enable faster content distribution.
Improve development efficiency.

Solution

Econify developed new React-based frontend web app with a standalone curation tool that enabled them to launch 4 new sites in just 3 months as well as offering a new, highly flexible way to curate them without having to touch a legacy Drupal CMS. In order to facilitate this, we implemented GraphQL to decouple backend services.

The modern, componentized stack that was implemented. allowed for truly modular sites, enabling NBC News to effectively and modularly organize assets, with the bonus of simply onboarding new developers. Finally, we rebuilt the CI pipeline for testing to move towards faster deployments.

Business Value

Econify's team enabled NBC News Digital to launch no less than 6 new verticals in total thanks to the implementation of faster feature development and deployment workflows across all sites. At the same time, we ensured consistent performance and simplified troubleshooting. A transformation in engineering that delivered a huge amount of value for the business.
